Bio Notes: James Elder was an Associate of the Edinburgh Architectural Association by 1930 or 1931, at which time his address was 98 Channel Street, Galashiels. By 1939-40 he was at 4 Glenfield Crescent, Galashiels. He worked for a time as assistant to J & J Hall in Galashiels. In 1947 he set up practice in that town with George Mann Cairns with an office in Roxburgh Street. In 1953 the practice moved to 54 and 56 Island Street. In the same year Elder & Cairns worked with Charles Turnbull of Alexander Inglis & Partners of Hawick on the Gala Rugby Football Club stand at Netherdale. In 1957 Charles Turnbull became a partner in the Elder & Cairns firm whilst remaining as a partner with Alexander Inglis. John Millar seems to have been the partner in charge of the Galashiels brnach of the practice in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It appears that it operated as Aitken & Turnbull by that date.
