He moved to become an assistant in the practice of Aitken & Turnbull in Hawick in 1960. In 1961 he transferred to Elder & Cairns in Galashiels and the following year he was assumed into partnership. He was admitted ARIBA in 1964 and ARIAS in 1965. Elder & Cairns seems to have formally merged with Aitken & Turnbull under the latter name sometime prior to 1965 as at that date he appears as a partner with Aitken & Turnbull.
