At that date his address was 40 Stanley Gardens, Galashiels. He worked as an assistant in the practice of J & J Hall in Galashiels. In 1947 he formed a partnership with James Elder who had worked for J & J Hall and who was also a member of the Edinburgh Architectural Association. Together they set up practice in an office in Roxburgh Street in Galashiels. In 1953 they moved to 54 and 56 Island Street, Galashiels. In that same year Elder & Cairns worked with Charles Turnbull of Alexander Inglis & Partners of Hawick on the Gala Rugby Football Club stand at Netherdale.
