Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Kennedy | Designation: | | Born: | 1849 | Died: | Before 1905 | Bio Notes: | James Kennedy was the son of Angus Kennedy, Glasgow architect and civil engineer and Isabella Dewar. He appears to have been assumed into partnership by his father along with Andrew Myles as Angus Kennedy, Son & Myles after 1968 and before 1870 and the firm continued under the same title at 99 Bath Street following his father's death in November 1870. By about 1872 James Kennedy seems to have had another office at 65 West Regent Street.
Myles departed from Angus Kennedy Son & Myles to commence independent practice at 121 Wellington Street around 1873. In 1875 James and his brother were practising together from 227 West George Street, which is Thomas's first appearance in the firm. In 1875 William McIlwraith who ran his own practice at 121 West Regent Street merged his practice with that of James Kennedy. Robert Brown, perhaps an assistant, was an additional partner and the practice title changing to McIlwraith Kennedy & Brown. The office was still at 227 West George Street. The partnership was short-lived.
James Kennedy married Mary Dawson on 18 June 1878, describing himself as "consulting engineer". He had his own flat by that time at 42 Raglan Street, near St George's Cross. By 1881 James and his family had fallen on bad times. James described himself as "civil engineer and architect" but had gone blind. At this time he was living with Mary and daughter Ruth aged two and his son Dewar aged 9 months in one room behind a sweet shop at 36 Dumbarton Road, Glasgow.
By 1891 the family was living in a seven room flat at 26 Charing Cross Mansions. James was a "confectioner" and lived with Mary, Ruth, Dewar and new child Irene. Ten years later the family lived at 25 Elmbank Street, though it would appear that Irene had died. James is described as a manufacturing confectioner, Ruth his clerk and his son Dewar as an apprentice painter.
James died before 1905.
