Thus he was a neighbour and contemporary of Thomas and James Kennedy with whom he later formed a partnership.
William junior was practising at 121 West Regent Street from 1872. In 1874-75 he merged his practice with that of the brothers James and Thomas Kennedy, Robert Brown being assumed as an additional partner, with an office at 227 West George Street. At the same time Robert Brown was assumed as an additional partner, the practice title becoming McIlwraith Kennedy & Brown. The office was at 227 West George Street. The partnership was brief: by the mid-1880s both McIlwraith and Thomas Kennedy were practising independently in Greenock.
