Basic Biographical Details Name: | William J McIlwraith | Designation: | | Born: | 9 August 1847 | Died: | 6 February 1909 | Bio Notes: | William McIlwraith was born at 31 Cadogan Street, Glasgow on 9 August 1847, the son of William McIlwraith, a foreman, and Margaret King, who came from Ayrshire. Thus he was a neighbour and contemporary of Thomas and James Kennedy with whom he later formed a partnership.
William junior was practising at 121 West Regent Street from 1872. In 1874-75 he merged his practice with that of the brothers James and Thomas Kennedy, Robert Brown being assumed as an additional partner, with an office at 227 West George Street. In 1881 William junior was as yet unmarried and lived with his parents at 80 Maxwell Road East, Glasgow.
The partnership with James Kennedy was brief: in 1884-1885 McIlwraith was practising in Greenock from 17 Hamilton Street, Thomas Kennedy, having moved to that town by 1882. William McIlwraith does not appear in either the 1891 or the 1901 Census, possibly because he may have been a long term mental patient by 1891. He died on 6 February 1909 at Woodilee Mental Asylum, aged 61 [incorrect] described as 'single, architect, usual residence Gartloch Asylum, cause cardiovascular disease'.
