Basic Biographical Details

Name: Dick Peddie, Todd & Jamieson
Designation: Architectural practice
Started: 1936
Ended: 1944(?)
Bio Notes: The partnership of Dick Peddie, Todd & Jamieson was formed in 1936, the partners being William James Walker Todd (born 1884), David John Chisholm (born 1884) and George Lindsay Auldjo Jamieson (born 1905). In that year the partnership of Jamieson & Arnott had been dissolved as a consequence of the enforced retirement of Ernest Arthur Oliphant Auldjo Jamieson through ill health. That partnership was then less busy than it had been and for reasons not entirely clear James Alexander Arnott left to practise alone. Jamieson's son, George Lindsay Auldjo Jamieson then sought a merger with J M Dick Peddie & W J Walker Todd. He brought to Dick Peddie & Walker Todd the Sydney Mitchell & Wilson archive, much of the Jamieson & Arnott archive and those clients who were his father's rather than Arnott's. In addition to the practice title of Dick Peddie, Todd & Jamieson, letterheads of that time bear the subhead 'incorporating Sydney Mitchell & Wilson' as on the Jamieson & Arnott letterheads. This appears to have been to leave no doubt that the Jamiesons had had the dominant financial interest in the Jamieson & Arnott partnership.

The practice conditions during the Second World War resulted in the merger of the Dick Peddie Todd & Jamieson and the Richardson & McKay practices in 1942, John Ross McKay having secured a lot of war work, perhaps more than he could find staff for. He quickly became the leading partner, particularly so after the death of William James Walker Todd on 29 April 1944, after which the firm continued as Dick Peddie McKay & Jamieson.
