Basic Biographical Details

Name: William Lawrie
Designation:
Born: c. 1821
Died: 12 April 1887
Bio Notes: William Lawrie was born in Stonehaven, Kincardineshire about 1821. In 1851 he worked as a clerk of works in Fordoun, Kincardineshire but moved to become an assistant to James Matthews, in charge of an Inverness office established just before Matthews' partner Thomas Mackenzie's death in October 1854.

Although not made a partner until 1864, Lawrie was given what seems to have been a free hand in the design work and for some years the Inverness office was the more prosperous. Matthews continued the Aberdeen office alone, and it was not until 1877 that Mackenzie's son, Alexander Marshall Mackenzie, was taken into partnership, having established a successful practice of his own in his native Elgin. Thereafter Matthews ran the practice as two separate partnerships - Matthews & Mackenzie in Aberdeen and Elgin, and Matthews & Lawrie in Inverness. When Lawrie died on 12 April 1887, the Inverness practice was inherited by John Hinton Gall (born 1848), who had been his chief assistant since 1872 and who continued the business under his own name, Matthews withdrawing completely from that branch of the firm.

Matthews was a keen collector of art and during his final years was generous in donating paintings for good causes in his native town of Stonehaven. He also donated some iron chairs for the new bowling and tennis greens in the town in 1885.

He died on 12 April 1887. He had suffered from paralysis for three months following an illness. He was known for his 'genial and kindly' temperament. He never married.
