The hospital and medical school site covers 129 000 sq m, and has over 4000 rooms. The combined construction costs of the hospital and school totals £210 million. At the time of building it was the largest construction site in Scotland.

The site was extensively landscaped: over 5000 trees were planted to screen the hospital from nearby craigmillar castle.
