Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Smith | Designation: | | Born: | | Died: | 1812 | Bio Notes: | William Smith was the father of John Smith, architect, Aberdeen. Little is known of the father except that he was known as 'Sink'em'; that he had his workshop in Longacre; that he designed and built Gilcomston Chapel of Ease and the houses at the bottom end of Marischal Street, all in Aberdeen.
From Stuart Donald: 'I am also able to add another possible addition, to the entry of William 'Sink'em' Smith died 1812. It would appear from evidence I have in the Minutes Books of St Andrew's Chapel, Longacre, that he may have designed the Chapel built for the Episcopalians to the commission of Bishop John Skinner. It would also appear that he had advised the then vestry that the Longacre Chapel was not suitable for extension [their numbers were burgeoning] and according to the Minute, made drawings available for a new Chapel [site unspecified]. This 'new' large Chapel was that eventually built in 1816 in King Street by Archibald Simpson.' |
