Basic Biographical Details Name: | Alan Dale | Designation: | | Born: | 19 July 1933 | Died: | 23 June 2011 | Bio Notes: | Alan Dale was born in Huddersfield on 19 July 1933 and brought up in Manchester, being educated at the Royal Technical College in Salford. After military service spent mainly in Germany, he embarked on his architectural training at the School of Art in Manchester and in the office of Harry S Fairhurst & Sons in the same city. Having passed the qualifying exam in 1965, he moved to landscape architects Derek Lovejoy & Partners, and subsequently worked as Chief Architect for building and civil engineering firm Harry Fairclough Construction.
In 1977 he moved to Scotland as Head of Building Services for The Scottish Development Agency. He remained there for the rest of his professional life, being promoted to Director of Development in 1984. In this role he surrounded himself with a team of visionary architects, planners, engineers and economists, and was responsible for commissioning numerous multi-million-pound projects aiming to bring new investment and activity into Scotland, inspired by cutting-edge examples from around the world.
He was an elder of the Church of Scotland, serving on its Artistic Matters Committee, and is remembered in his obituary as ‘a caring and sociable man whose work and life were characterised by humour, dogged determination to get things done, a deep moral sense and his fundamental humanity’. His personal interests included tending his vegetable garden and fishing.
He died on 23 June 2011, survived by his wife Alison, whom he had married in 1965, and their daughters Helen and Caroline.
