He appears to have formed a partnership with David Ferguson prior to 1970. Fergsuon had been admitted LRIBA in 1956. Alexander Murdoch Buchanan was taken into partnership sometime before 1970. By 1980 the practice title had become Stevenson, Ferguson & Buchanan.
Alexander Murdoch Buchanan was born on 9 March 1919 at Glendoick Manse in Errol Parish, the son of Joseph Weir Buchanan, a UF Church clergyman and at that time serving as a Lieutenant with the Royal Garrison Artillery, and his wife, Mary Dreghorn McCaw. He studied at Glasgow School of Architecture, He was admitted ARIBA in 1948. In 1950 he was living and perhaps also working in Troon. In 1970 he was working for Stevenson & Ferguson at 11 Barns Street, Ayr. He was sole partner in 1980. In 1989 he had been retired for some time and the practice was carried on by his son, Alexander Francis Douglas Buchanan.
