He studied for a BSc degree in Glasgow. He commenced practice on his own account in 1950 at Irish Street, Dumfries. He was admitted ARIBA in 1950. Peter McMurdo was taken into partnership about 1964, the practice title becoming Gordon J Kinghorn & Partners. A branch office was opened in Tain in 1967 and three years later the Dumfries office was moved to George Street in that town. After the death of McMurdo in 1972, the practice split.
