He studied at the School of Architecture, Edinburgh College of Art and graduated in 1951. Some time after the Second World War he was taken into partnership by his father as A M & W McMichael. He continued the practice after his father's death on 14 February 1955. By 1970 he had moved to work for Oxford Regional Hospital Board, Old Road, Headington, Oxford.
