Bio Notes: Charles Smith was born in Hampshire on 29 October 1832. He was articled to William Ford Poulton of Reading and worked as assistant to William Milford Teulon before commencing practice on his own account in Reading in 1857. He took his son Charles Steward Smith (born 1858) into partnership in 1893. The partnership was joined by Harry Hutt in 1908.

The elder Charles Smith died on 6 February 1912. His son lived until 1933.
