Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Sutherland Ross | Designation: | | Born: | 28 June 1904 | Died: | 30 July 1977 | Bio Notes: | John Sutherland Ross was born on 28 June 1906, the son of John Ross, painter and his wife __MacLeod. From February 1921 he was articled to Alexander Ross & Son while attending the Royal Burgh of Inverness continuation classes in Building Construction and Architectural Design. He remained with Alexander Ross & Son for five years as an apprentice but it is not yet clear where he worked from 1926 until 1938, though it must be assumed he remained with Alexander Ross. In 1938-39 he was a lecturer in Architectural Design at the Burgh Continuation Classes while having a post as chief assistant to Alexander Ross & Son.
In 1939 Ross was called up and served with an infantry regiment in Cape Town, South Africa, Egypt and North Africa. From 1943-45 he undertook survey work in the Middle East while on military service.
He returned to his previous post with Alexander Ross & Son after the war. He was admitted LRIBA in 1949, proposed by John Alistair Ross, William James Taylor and Alexander Cullen, junior.
He died on 30 July 1977 at his home in Fearn in Ross-shire.
