Basic Biographical Details

Name: George Marr
Designation: Architect
Born: c. 1846
Died: 3 October 1899
Bio Notes: George Marr was born about 1846, the son of George Marr, inspector of the poor, architect and surveyor and his wife Isobel. The older Marr practised as an architect and surveyor at Chapelhall of Udny from at least 1855, concentrating almost exclusively on school and farm work. The younger Marr seems to have joined his father in the 1860s and is also described as architect and surveyor. The practice moved to Ellon about that time, the name changing to G & G Marr in 1872.

In the summer of 1878, Marr (perhaps after the retirement of the older Marr) was taken into partnership by the Aberdeen civil engineer George Gordon Jenkins (though there is evidence that G & G Marr was still in operation in August of that year). Throughout their early careers, the work of Jenkins & Marr was of a simple and strictly practical nature, but with Mannofield Church (1882), for which an experienced assistant was probably brought into the practice, it moved to a rather higher plane.

In the earlier 1880s Jenkins & Marr formed a loose partnership with William Davidson of Ellon, which lasted at least until the late 1890s.

Marr died intestate on 3 October 1899 though his moveable and heritable estate amounted to £9,411 11s. He was married to Williamina Barbara Ogg but she died young on 5 February 1881. He never remarried. In Marr's obituary it is reported that he had a 'special acquaintance with designing papermills'.
