Basic Biographical Details

Name: Badenoch & Bruce
Designation:
Born: October 1892
Died: 15 November 1910
Bio Notes: Henry Greig Badenoch was born in 1847 in Aberdeen and educated at Union Row Academy in the same city. He was articled to John Russell Mackenzie on 9 November 1863, and remained on as an assistant for three years after completing his apprenticeship. Badenoch then worked as an assistant in Leeds in 1871, then in Nottingham from 1872 to 1875 as assistant to Henry Tully and then to Frank West Rich (1840-1929). In 1879, Badenoch commenced independent practice in Newcastle, where he went into partnership in October 1892 with James Bruce (born 1857), who had been a fellow assistant in Rich's office and had subsequently been an assistant in the Colonial Department in Adelaide, Australia and to to J H Angas, before returning to Newcastle in July 1891.

Both Badenoch and Bruce were elected FRIBA on 2 December 1907, Badenoch's proposers being Arthur B Plummer, William Glover and J Walton Taylor, and Bruce's being Plummer, Rich and Alfred William Stephens Cross. Badenoch was a Member of the Northern Architectural Association and MSA 1895. The practice seems to have specialised in Presbyterian churches as they executed at least 13 commissions in the Newcastle area during the years of the partnership.

The partnership was dissolved by mutual consent on 15 November 1910 apparently because Badenoch had been seriously ill. Bruce then left to practice on his own. Badenoch resumed practice in 1912 but the partnership was not renewed. Badenoch’s eldest son was articled to his father and managed the practice while he was ill but thereafter emigrated to Toronto as an assistant.
