Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Bruce | Designation: | | Born: | 9 February 1857 | Died: | 1918 | Bio Notes: | James Bruce was born in Newcastle upon Tyne on 9 February 1857 and served his articles there with Watson & Scott from 1872 to 1877. He then moved to the office of Frank West Rich in the same town as assistant, and there he met Henry Greig Badenoch (born in Aberdeen in 1847). He travelled to Adelaide, Australia in July 1881 to join the Colonial Architects Department in Adelaide and remained there for ten years. From 1889 -1891 he worked as architect to J H Angas, returning to Newcastle in July 1891. His movements for the ensuing year are unknown but he joined Badenoch in partnership in Newcastle upon Tyne in October 1892 as Badenoch & Bruce. Both were elected FRIBA on 2 December 1907, Bruce's proposers being Rich, Arthur B Plummer and Alfred William Stephens Cross. The partnership of Badenoch & Bruce was dissolved by mutual consent on 18 November 1910, apparently because Badenoch had been seriously ill. Bruce then set up practice in Northumberland Street.
James Bruce died in early 1918 (his death was register between January and March).
