Basic Biographical Details

Name: David William Baxter (junior)
Designation:
Born: 8 December 1906
Died: 17 March 2001
Bio Notes: David William Baxter Junior was born in 1906, the son of David William Baxter of Johnston & Baxter, Dundee, and his wife Sarah Kidd. He did not serve his apprenticeship in his father's practice but instead was articled to Mills & Shepherd from 1924 to 1929, attending evening classes at Dundee Technical College followed by a correspondence course through the Institute of Chartered Surveyors. He remained with the same firm as junior assistant for a year after completing his apprenticeship, transferring in 1930 to his father's office. In the autumn of 1931 he travelled to Spain to study architecture, and in the same year took up a junior partnership in his father's practice, being left in charge of the Dundee office after his father opened a branch office in Blairgowrie.

He was commissioned in the Lands Branch of the Scottish Command in 1940, reaching the rank of Captain, but returned to the family firm after the war was over. He was admitted LRIBA on 16 December 1945, his proposers being John Donald Mills, John Ross McKay and Robert Stirling Reid. His nomination papers state that whilst in his father's firm to that date he had worked on additions to hospitals as well as factories, schools, housing schemes and domestic buildings.

In 1953 he was elected FRIAS. He continued the practice after his father retired in 1954. The firm became Baxter Clark & Paul after James Clark and James Paul were taken into partnership in 1959. Baxter was elected FRIBA on 5 June 1968, proposed by Thomas Hill Thoms, James Paul and John Stewart Clark at which time he was senior partner with Baxter Clark & Paul. At this time Thoms who had known him for 40 years reported that he was responsible for most of the hospital work in the practice. He also remarks that Baxter was always keen on the affairs of the RIAS and had been a member of Council on numerous occasions.

Baxter retired from the practice in 1970. He moved to Blairgowrie and pursued his interest in golf. He designed a house for himself overlooking the golf course and was captian of the Rosemount Golf Club Company. He was always interested in sport and excelled in a variety of different activities. He was a founder member of the Blairgowrie Hockey Club and co-founder member of the Glenshee Chairlift.

He died at the Royal Infirmary, Perth, on 15 March 2001. He was married twice but both wives (Jessie Isla McLauchlan and Margaret Longely) had predeceased him. He was survived by his son Colin, his daughter-in-law Cynthia, three granddaughters and a grandson.
