Name: | John Ross McKay |
Designation: | Architect |
Born: | 1884 |
Died: | 2 August 1962 |
Bio Notes: | John Ross McKay was born on 11 June 1884, the son of William McKay and his wife Elizabeth Anderson. He served his apprenticeship in an unspecified architect's office from 1899 to 1903, studying at Edinburgh School of Applied Art and Heriot-Watt College. Thereafter he entered the office of Francis William Deas, continuing his studies and receiving his diploma in the 1905. He joined Robert Stodart Lorimer as an assistant in 1906, and during the years running up to the First World War spent three weeks of each year travelling, in Scotland, England, France and Belgium. He served in France in the First World War from 1917 to 1919 with the VIII Corps HQ and as a lieutenant with the Royal Scots Fusiliers (Labour Corps), working on panoramas and maps, and returned to Lorimer's office as chief assistant in the latter year. He applied for admittance as ARIBA under the war exemption scheme soon thereafter, and was admitted in mid-1920, his proposers being John Wilson, Francis William Deas and Lorimer, who described him as a 'successful student' at Edinburgh College of Art. However, by this time his employment with Lorimer had ended bitterly. During the war he had served as a staff captain under one of Lorimer's clients, General Hunter-Weston of Hunterston. Hunter-Weston invited him to stay for a weekend and Lorimer instructed him to decline as he did not think it appropriate that an assistant should be a guest of a client; he went, and he was either dismissed or reacted by resigning on the following Monday.
Shortly afterwards, in the spring of 1920, he went into partnership with James Smith Richardson, who had already set up practice at 4 Melville Street, Edinburgh. It was a partnership of the disaffected as Richardson also felt embittered about Lorimer, whom he regarded as having 'pinched' one of his clients shortly after setting up in practice.
McKay carried out most of the practice's work after Richardson took on additional duties for public or institutional bodies, first as full-time Inspector of Ancient Monuments for the Office of Works (from 1920) and then as a part-time lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art (from 1922). Richardson and McKay had their revenge on Lorimer in the matter of the Scottish National War Memorial, with Richardson successfully defeating Lorimer's scheme in November 1922 by erecting a canvas mock-up which Lorimer described as a 'nightmare erection' which gave no 'adequate idea of the silhouette
or of its light shade or colour'.
Between December 1924 and February 1926 Richardson & McKay were joined in practice at 4 Melville Street by Donald MacDonald MacKie (born 1897), a former pupil of Lorimer who had completed his apprenticeship with McKay after the First World War and had worked as assistant to the firm from May 1922 to May 1924. It is unclear whether a formal partnership existed or whether MacKie simply worked independently from a shared office, but MacKie left in February 1926 to live and work at his own premises of Coltbridge Studio, Murrayfield.
McKay was Vice-President of the Edinburgh Architectural Association c.1930, and was elected FRIBA on 5 December 1938, his proposers being Thomas Forbes Maclennan, Reginald Fairlie and William James Walker Todd. In 1942 Richardson left the partnership and McKay merged his practice with that of Walker Todd. McKay quickly became the leading partner, particularly so after the death of Walker Todd on 29 April 1944.
McKay was president of the Clan MacKay Society. His other recreations were golf, riding and collecting architectural books, He married Dora Kennedy in 1925. His last years were clouded by mental illness and for a time he was cared for at Craig House. He died on 2 August 1962. He was survived by his wife Dora Kennedy. |
