He trained as a mason. In 1825 he became a burgess of Dumfries and in the 1840s and 1850s worked extensively on the Crichton Royal in Dumfries. In his will he is described as an architect. In 1855 he is described as 'archiect and surveyor of the burgh [of Dumfries]. Alexander Fraser was articled to him some time prior to the mid-1850s. In 1855 J H Bell was his assistant.
He died on 5 July 1858.
