Bio Notes: Graeme Aylward was born about 1940. He studied architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic and at the Architectural Association where he graduated in 1964. He won the Bristol University Award for a final year student at the AA that year and was awarded the RIBA thesis prize. He then studied for a Masters Degree in City and Regional Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He worked as an assistant with Gollins, Melvin & Ward, Chamberlain Powell & Moya before joining Derek Stow & Partners as partner in 1967. There he worked on major health, residential and industrial projects. He was also interested in education and this led him to becoming a visiting tutor at the AA and UCL and he was appointed to a lectureship at the University of Strathclyde in 1970.

He joined W J Cairns & Partners in 1973 and undertook a range of significant projects, including a study of the Upper Bann Valley in Northern Ireland, the Cromarty Oil Refinery and the Megget Valley Reservoir. This work was related to his research interests where he developed models, concepts and ideas about the changing physical and social environment against which major projects had to be assessed, making use of computer visual effects to measure the viability of new developments in the countryside.

He was appointed not long before 1982 to the chair of Architecture at Plymouth Polytechnic.

Aylward died after an accident in his home on 27 August 1982.
