Basic Site Details Name: | Cockenzie School and Schoolhouse | Town, district or village: | Cockenzie | City or county: | East Lothian | Country: | Scotland | Parish: | | Status: | | Grid ref: | | Notes: | ‘The elevation shows an extremely handsome design, rather Gothic in character, but devoid of ornament. The principal entrance is from the south, the front wall of which is pierced with three large windows, admitting a flood of light into the interior of the schoolroom. From the centre of the roof there springs a neat belfry, light and graceful in character.’
The main room was 44 feet by 22 feet, a smaller one measuring 15 feet square. Attached to the main school building was the schoolmaster’s accommodation. The cost of the building, although initially estimated to be between £1,500 and £2,000 eventually came to ‘considerably under £1,000.’ (Courier)
