Basic Biographical Details Name: | Robert McLachlan II | Designation: | | Born: | 1816 | Died: | 1885 | Bio Notes: | Robert McLachlan (known as Robert McLachlan II) was born in 1816, the son of Robert McLachlan, architect and builder in Ayr, and his wife Janet Boyd. He was primarily a builder but probably designed some of the buildings for which he contracted. In 1844 at Dundonald he married Jane Muir Jack, daughter of Hugh Jack, land agent and overseer at Shewalton Mains, Dundonald.
In 1850 Robert II merged his father's business with that of his wife's brother George Jack as Jack & McLachlan, the practice being based in Troon. The 1851 Census lists Robert as a Master Builder, and at that time he was employing five men and living at Muirhead, Dundonald, still working in partnership with Jack.
Jack died in 1858 and in the same year McLachlan moved to Glasgow. He built mainly in the Rhu, Lanark and Beith areas. He died in Greenock in 1885 and was buried in Ayr. His son Robert Boyd McLachlan (also known as Robert McLachlan III), born 1846 at Corraith, Dundonald, continued the business only as a sculptor undertaking the war memorials at Beith, Patna, Kirkoswald and Minishant, and gravestones all over Ayrshire. Robert III died in 1921 and is commemorated by a Carrara marble font in Trinity Church, Beith. His sons William and Hugh continued the business in Johnstone and Ayr respectively until 1990. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | ![Item 1 of 7](images/table_item.gif) | Muirhead, Dundonald, Ayrshire, Scotland | Private(?) | Before 1846 | After 1854 | | ![Item 2 of 7](images/table_item.gif) | Feu no 116, West Portland Street/St Clair Terrace, Troon, Ayrshire, Scotland | Business | 1850 | After 1851 | | ![Item 3 of 7](images/table_item.gif) | Rhu, Dunbartonshire, Scotland | Private(?) | 1853 * | | | ![Item 4 of 7](images/table_item.gif) | Shandon, Dunbartonshire, Scotland | Private(?) | 1853 * | | | ![Item 5 of 7](images/table_item.gif) | Millheugh House, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Private(?) | 1855 * | | | ![Item 6 of 7](images/table_item.gif) | Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1858 | | | ![Item 7 of 7](images/table_item.gif) | Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland | Business | 1885 * | | |
