Name: | Honeyman, Jack & Robertson |
Designation: | |
Born: | 1947 |
Died: | |
Bio Notes: | James Maclaren Honeyman (born 1890), who had continued the practice of John Bennie Wilson and John Archibald Wilson as John B Wilson Son & Honeyman after the deaths of the Wilsons in 1923 and 1926 respectively, took William Archibald Park Jack (born 1912) into partnership in 1937, the firm's name changing to Honeyman & Jack. The practice went into abeyance during the Second World War, Honeyman serving as a Regional Officer with the Ministry of Works and Jack as a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, until 1946 when the partnership resumed. The following year Jack's brother-in-law George William Robertson (born 1902) became a partner, the firm thereafter becoming Honeyman, Jack & Robertson. During the ensuing years the practice was involved mainly in factory work and in further jobs for the Ministry of Works.
Honeyman was elected FRIBA on 8 July 1947, his proposers being Andrew Graham Henderson, William James Smith and Thomas Johnston Beveridge. At that time the firm's office was at 92 Bath Street, Glasgow, and Honeyman was living at 41 Queensborough Gardens in the same city. Jack was admitted ARIBA on 29 November 1949, his proposers being Henry Vaughan Lanchester, Andrew Graham Henderson and Basil Spence, having passed the RIBA only four months previously; it was presumably due to the disruption of the war that he had not taken the exam at an earlier stage in his career. Robertson was admitted FRIBA in 1950. By 1953, when Jack was elected FRIBA, the practice had expanded to incorporate an Oban branch. Further branches were subsequently established in Kelso, Edinburgh and Stirling where Jack lived.
In 1960 George Robertson’s son Charles Archibald Robertson was taken into partnership. In 1962 John M Cochrane and Tom Rankin became partners followed in the later 1960s by Robert H McEachern and in 1970 by Alan MacDonald. In 1988 Hamish Clark and Douglas Fotheringham joined. Alan McDonald retired in 1996 and the practice is now (2008) run by Douglas Fotheringham and Hamish Clark.
Jack died in St Andrews on 28 May 1996.
