Erected as a Chapel of Ease to St Cuthbert\'s. West Coates was the first wholly new church to be erected in Edinburgh for the Established Church since the Disruption of 1843.

The foundation stone of a new Presbyterian Church, to be named \" West Coates Church,\" was laid at Edinburgh yesterday. It will be cruciform in plan, and will be erected in the later style of Pointed Gothic. It will be built of freestone, and will seat 900 persons at an estimated cost of £7,500. Mr Bryce is the architect, and Messrs Oman and Mansom the contractors. [Building News 17 July 1868 p490]
