Alban Douglas Rendell Caroe was born in Chelsea in 1904, the son of William Douglas Caroe, architect and his wife, Grace Rendell. He was articled to his father and in 1928 sent to Sir John Burnet & partners for further experience before returning to his father’s practice in 1929. He was taken into partnership along with the older Herbert Passmore and Aubyn Robinson in 1931.

William Douglas Caroe died in 1938. As the Church Commissioners then required their architect to be precluded from private practice, the practice then had to be divided, Passmore becoming architect to the Church Commissioners, and Alban Caroe and Aubyn Robinson continuing the private client side fo the business. Both retired to become consultants in the late 1960s when Martin Caroe took over.

Caroe died in 1991. Carie was married to Gwendy, sister of Sir Lawrence Bragg.
