Douglas Livingston Brice

Douglas Livingston Brice was born in Kilmarnock on 17th August 1938, the second son of Leonard, an office manager, who served in two world wars, and his wife Peggy. He was educated at Kilmarnock Academy, leaving in 1955 to an apprenticeship with Alexander Dunlop. He enrolled in that year in the part time course at Glasgow School of Art, having been advised that the practical experience gained would be more valuable than full time classes, which he was well qualified to take. He did three years, then one year full time at the Royal College of Science & Technology.

He returned to part time study and part time work to enable him to earn money to get married, which he did, to Eelanne Neilson in 1960. Between 1959 and 1960 he worked as an intermediate assistant with the Burgh of Kilmarnock.

From 1960 he was an intermediate assistant with Hay and Steel in Kilmarnock, under Duncan Macfarlane, and Stewart Hume, during which time he designed a new house, into which he and Eelanne moved in 1962. Between 1964 and 1965 he spent a year again as an intermediate assistant with Lanark County Council. He passed his finals in 1965, and became ARIBA, ARIAS, after Professional Practice time served. Varied works with different employers followed including a year with Covell Mathews, followed by a period in Paisley Burgh Architects office and a year between 1968 and 1969 with William Loudon & Sons. In 1969 he was appointed Chief Architect for James Laidlaw and Sons in Rutherglen. He left after two years to form his own practice, becoming their consultant on a number of significant projects. W I [Iain] Munro became his first partner in 1972,operating in Kilmarnock, and R J [Bob] Duguid, his second in 1973 in Rutherglen, at 31a Dalmarnock Road. Brice found splitting his time between the two offices awkward, and offered Munro the chance to take over the Kilmarnock operation, which he did, in 1976, as W I Munro Architects. Brice was elected FRIAS in 1986. He retired in 1990, mainly for stress reasons . Duguid carried on the business as sole partner.
The practice won a” Regeneration of Scotland” award, and a” Scottish Civic Trust “ award, in 1990, for Whiteinch Homes Sheltered Housing for Thomas Chalmers Housing Association Ltd.

He and Eelanne have two daughters, Avon and Abigail. Abigail studied Architecture at the Mackintosh school, and at Robert Gordon’s in Aberdeen, becoming ARIAS in 1995. She worked with Lane Bremner and Garnet, Aberdeen DC, and D L Brice, and changed careers to study Drama in 2000. She married James Gemmell, an Architect now with Holmes Miller, in 1998, and they have two daughters.

Brice’s interests were, and are, golf, hockey, yacht cruising and racing, piano, amateur dramatics, and professional roleplay.
