Thomas ('Tom') Laurie was born in Wishaw on 11 November 1938. He was educated at Hamilton Academy from 1950-56 and studied surveying at Glasgow College of Technology from 1956-61. During this period he worked with the firm of quantity surveyors, Robert C Brown in Hamilton. He was elected ARICS in 1961.

From 1959-62 he worked in Cumbernauld New Town Development Corporation but returned to private practice with Robert H Soper & Co in 1962, being promoted to partner the following year. Soper had offices in Cumbernauld and Edinburgh. In 1977 he opened his own practice in Cumbernauld, Thomas Laurie Associates. A Glasgow office opened in 1983 and the firm became The Keillor Laurie Martin Partnership in 1991. He was awarded the OBE in 1888.

Laurie has a wide interest in the Arts in Scotland as well as traditional music and language. In 1961 Thomas Laurie became a founder member of the Cumbernauld Theatre Group and from 1964-72 served as a board member, the Cottage Theatre, Cumbernauld. A board member and former Chairman of the Traverse Theatre (1972–76), Laurie is also a past Chairman and Trustee of WASPS Trust (Workshop and Artists' Studio Provision Scotland) and a former member of the Drama Panel, Scottish Arts Council (1973–82) and of the Scottish Arts Council (1976-82.) He is also a former Trustee of the Scottish Civic Trust and a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (1984).

Laurie enjoys most forms of sport and is a keen hill walker. He enjoys the theatre and collecting contemporary art. He volunteers with Community projects in the inner city in Glasgow.

He is married to Jennifer Rose and has one son and two daughters.
