Robert Wilson was born on 19 November 1929, the son of John Wilson, doctor of medicine, and his wife Williamina Crawford Allan, milliner. He studied architecture at Glasgow School of Art. He was elected ARIBA in 1954 and ARIAS in 1956. He joined the practice of Thomson, McCrea & Sanders at some point before 1965. He was a partner in the firm until 1995, having latterly taken on the role of consultant. The remaining partners in the firm were David R B Ferguson and John Russell.

Wilson transferred to the retired A RIAS in 1997. He died on 14 August 2003 at his home in Bishopbriggs. He was married twice, first to Sheila McGregor Watt, a secretary, and second to Christine McFadyen or Alexander, a draughtswoman.
