John Calderwood Robertson was born on 15 February 1928, the son of Robert Barr Robertson, shipping superintendent, and his wife, Margaret Munn Kerr. He graduated BArch from the University of Strathclyde and was elected ARIBA in 1954. He was also a qualified town planner. By 1970 he had joined the practice of Hay, Steel MacFarlane & Partners and became a partner.

He died on 24 November 1985 at Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock, survived by his wife Rona Margaret Mitchell.
