A Communist during his youth, Richard Llewelyn-Davies studied for the degree of BA at the university of Cambridge.

He was briefly in partnership with Peter Moro from 1938. He was elected ARIBA in 1939. He took part in a Home Service radio talk on post-war house planning with Leslie Martin and Elizabeth Denby in 1941. In 1942 Llewelyn-Davies joined the London, Midland and Scottish Railway's engineering and planning division. During the 1950s he was employed by the Nuffield Provisional Hospital Trust. In December 1959 he was appointed suppporting consultant on Edinburgh Royal Infirmary redevelopment (with Robert Matthews as architect). He was made professor at Bartlett School of Architecture in 1960, heading the school from 1961. In 1969 he left the Bartlett to take up William Holford's former London planning chair as Professor of Urban Planning and Head of the School of Environmental Studies from 1970 where he remained until 1975.

He was the designer of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

He was elected FRIBA in ****.

He set up the firm Llewelyn Davies Weeks with architect John Weeks in 1960 which about 2005-6 became Llewelyn Davies Yeang, with Ken Yeang.
