David Duncan was born on 29 May 1913, the son of David Duncan, postman and his wife, __Johnstone. He was articled to the firm of Maclaren Soutar Salmond in Dundee from 1930 to 1933. In the latter year he won the Leverhulme Scholarship which enabled him to move to London to study at the Architectural Association Schools and to seek wider experience in various offices which have yet to be identified. He travelled in England in 1937 and in Holland, Germany and Denmark in summer 1938, researching agricultural planning.

He passed the qualifying exam in July 1938 and was admitted ARIBA on 9 January 1939, his proposers being Charles Geddes Soutar, Verner Owen Rees and Stephen Ernest Dykes Bower, respectively President and Honorary Secretary of the Architectural Association. By the time of his application for Associateship in November the previous year he had obtained a position in the Post Office Department of H M Office of Works, London.

He worked in Birmingham in the late 1940s, was living in Wigtownshire in the early 1950s, and by 1957 had joined the Department of Health in Edinburgh. He resigned his RIBA membership in 1976.

He died at home on 24 October 1999. He was survived by his wife, Annabelle Soutar Brown and one son who lived in Edinburgh and two daughters.
