John Green was born on 20 June 1787 at Newton Fell House, Nafferton, the son of a carpenter and agricultural implement maker. He trained with his father. The business expanded and was moved to Corbridge where the father and son took on more general building work.

In 1820 John Green left his father and moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne to practise on his own account as an architect. His son Benjamin (1813-1858) and his nephew John (c1807-1868) both became architects. Benjamin had trained with the older Pugin and joined his father's practice in the 1830s. Father and son practice together until the former's death in 1858. John Green was said to have been a plain practical businessman while his son was more artistic. John was both an engineer and an architect, being AMICE and FRIBA.

The Greens designed a number of Gothic churches which did not attempt archaeological accuracy but their Greek Revival designs were more successful. They designed the Grey Monument and the Theatre Royal in Newcastle-upon-Tyne as well as undertaking engineering work, particular railway work. They were also known for the designs of farmhouses and were employed by the Duke of Northumberland for this purpose.

In 1846 they were commissioned to design all the stations between Newcastle and Berwick. The elder Green spcialised in bridge design and was awarded a medal by the Institution of Civil Engineers for his system of laminated timber bridges. He also designed a wrought-iron suspension bridge at Whorlton in County Durham which is the oldest bridge of its type in the country still supported unaided by the original chains.

John Green died on 30 September 1852 in Newcastle.
