P & W Anderson was a Glasgow construction firm which had expanded to include offices in London by the time of the First World War. At that time it was involved in government contracts and was under the direction of John Anderson, son of one of the founding partners, Peter Anderson. In 1917 a large part of the 15,000-strong workforce was recruited to the Royal Engineers, John Anderson being rewarded with a knighthood.

John Anderson took over as chairman on the death of his father in 1922, but business waned and the firm went into liquidation in 1925. Thereafter John Anderson lectured and wrote on philosophical subjects.
