Graham R Dawbarn was born on 8 September 1893 and attended Cambridge University where he was awarded a second class honours in Maths for his Tripos Part 1 in 1913 and a first class honours in Architectural Studies Part 1 in 1914. He returned to Cambridge after the First World War and assisted Professor E S Prior in the Architecture School. In 1920-21 he worked in the office of Arthur Keen as an improver and in the latter year 'passed the war final RIBA examination' in London and was elected ARIBA his proposers being Arthur Keen, Ernest Newton amd Edward Prior.

Dawbarn appears to have spent a period of time working for the Public Works Department in Hong Kong as the witness to his signature on his RIBA Nomination papers is an employee of this department, suggesting that Dawbarn was there in late 1921. He returned to the UK from Hong Kong in July 1923.
