Philip Charles Hardwick was born on 12 September 1822, the son of London architect Philip Hardwick. He was articled to Edward Blore and assisted in his father's office from 1843. He shared an office with his father from 1852, although not in partnership, and succeeded to his father's practice on the latter's death in 1870.
