Francis Cranmer Penrose was born in Bracebridge, Lincolnshire on 29 October 1817. He was a pupil of Edward Blore from 1835 to 1839 and later practised on his own account in London, being appointed Surveyor to the Fabric of St Paul's Cathedral from 1852 to 1899. He was First Director of the British School at Athens in 1886-7 and 1890-1. He died in Wimbledon on 15 February 1903.
