William Lamb was born in Montrose on 1 June 1893 and was apprenticed to his older brother James as a stonemason at the age of thirteen, attending classes at Montrose Academy. He served with the Queen's Highlanders in Belgium and France during the First World War but was eventually invalided home, having suffered extensive damage to his right hand. Despite this, he proceeded to Edinburgh College of Art where he learnt to draw, paint and sculpt with his left hand. After two years there he made a cycle tour of France and Italy before returning to Montrose in 1924 to set up a sculpture studio in Bridge Street above the shop of the painter George Cathro. Through him Lamb became involved with a group of young Scots who believed in the idea of a Scottish Renaissance in life and the arts, among whom was the architect George Fairweather.

Lamb produced an extensive output of etchings, drawings, watercolours and sculptures in clay, plaster, wood, stone and bronze, which he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy in London, and the Paris Salon. The Duchess of York, a native of Angus, was among his clients, commissioning him to produce portraits of her daughters Elizabeth (later queen) and Margaret Rose and later of herself. The proceeds of these royal commissions enabled him to establish a new studio in Market Street, Montrose in 1934, for which his friend George Fairweather produced the plans.

Lamb died in 1951. His Market Street studio is now a museum in his memory.
