Frederick Richard Wilson was born in 1827 and was articled to Lewis Nockells Cottingham and worked for Charles Barry on the Houses of Parliament before writing sanitary reports on various towns, He went to Alnwick, Northumberland in 1854 as site architect for Anthony Salvin who was restoring Alnwick Castle and in 1859 he set up business on his own account at Alnwick. He won the RIBA Silver Medal for drawings of Brinkburn Priory in 1861 and was admitted FRIBA in 1873 his proposers being T H Wyatt, Robert Jewell Withers and Thomas Chatfield Clarke. From 1880-1892 he was a surveyor to Alnwick Rural Sanitary Authority and served on the local Board of Health for 27 years and on the Burial Board for 12 years. As Diocesan Surveyor for Lindisfarne 1877-1892 he restored many churches with a reputation for careful work that respected the original fabric. He died on 6 May 1894. His elder son Geoffrey was Alnwick Town Surveyor for many years and Marmaduke Temple Wilson was Surveyor to Alnwick RDC and took over the family practice.
