James Bunstone Bunning was born in London on 6 October 1802 and trained in the office of his father Daviel James Bunning, surveyor, from the age of thirteen. He then served his articles in the office of George Smith. He was appointed Clerk of the City's Works (of London) in 1843, his title changing to City Architect after 1847. He died on 2 November 1863.
