John Russell Pope was born in New York on 2 April 1874. He studied in Europe and America and commenced independent practice in New York in 1903, building up a successful business which was of particular note for its public buildings, especially museums and universities. He took Otto R Eggers and Daniel Paul Higgins into partnership in 1922, and they continued his practice at 542 Fifth Avenue after his death on 27 August 1937.
