Arnold Thornely was born on 7 October 1870 and was articled to Francis Usher Holme and George Holme of Liverpool from 1887 to 1891. He remained as assistant, and attended Liverpool School of Art and Liverpool Architectural Society lectures. He worked as assistant to Willink & Thickness in 1891, travelled in France, and passed the qualifying exam in 1893, enabling him to be admitted ARIBA that year. He commenced independent practice in Liverpool in 1898 and later joined Frank Gatley Briggs and Henry Vernon Wolstenholme in partnership as Gatley, Wolstenholme & Thornely.

Thornely was President of the Liverpool Architectural Society in 1910 and 1911. He was knighted in 1933 and received the RIBA Architecture Bronze Medal for Ulster in the same year. Prior to that, on 28 September 1921, Briggs had died. Wolstenholme died in 1936, Thornely continuing to practise alone thereafter.

Thornely died on 1 October 1953.

N.B. This is a skeleton record only, entered in the Dictionary because of Thornely's role in nominating a number of Scottish architects for membership of the RIBA.
