(Miss) Kathleen Anne Veitch
Architect
Year Only
1908
Exact Date
03/11/1968
Kathleen Anne Veitch was born on 24 April 1908, the daughter of James Veitch, tweed manufacturer, and his wife, Margaret Reeve Currie. From 1924-29 she studied at the Architectural Association in London, passing her final exams in March 1929 and he professional practice exam in June. She won the Owen Jones Scholarship that year and travelled to Spain. From 1929 to 1930 and perhaps later she worked as assistant in the practice Romaine-Walker & Jenkins. She was elected ARIBA in 1930, her proposers being Gilbert H Jenkins, J Alan Slater, and A J J Nobert.

In 1931 she sailed from London to Bombay with her mother and sister. From about 1931 until 1934 she worked for the Duke of Roxburgh on estate building improvement. She worked in London in 1935. She had returned to Scotland by the mid-1930s and was a member of the Hawick Art Club where she exhibited watercolours in 1934, 1935 and 1936. In 1937 she lectured to the club on 'Comfort and Beauty in the Home'.

One of her few known works is Little Salt Hall in Hawick, a streamlined villa with Arts & Crafts elements and an unusual curved plan that she is believed to have designed for herself. Veitch is reputed to have been the daughter of the original owners of the adjacent villa of Summerfield, who are said to have gifted her this portion of their land for the purpose. She is also rumoured to have designed a similar villa to Little Salt Hall in the Bemersyde area of the Borders, although no such villa has yet been identified. Later, from 1958, she spent ten years working on the renovations and repairs of the Church of Our Lady and St Joseph, Selkirk. She was an associate of the RIAS from 1956.

She was found dead on the north shore of the Firth of Forth at Elie on 11 March 1968. She died of strangulation by a ligature and of a fractured skull. She may have been murdered some weeks (in February) before her death was registered.
