Thomas Taylot Scott came of an East Cumberland farming family. He was articled to J Crosby Hetherington and George Dale Oliver of Carlisle in 1875 and remained as assistant. Subsequently he moved to London to gain wider experience. He passed the qualifying exam and was elected ARIBA on 20 March 1882, his proposers being John Thomas Wimperis, Thomas Henry Watson and Walter Seckham Witherington. In the same year he won the RIBA Silver Medal and prize for his measured drawings, his subject being St David's Cathedral, Wales; and returned to Carlisle to commence practice on his own account. He was elected FRIBA on 12 January 1891, his proposers being Alfred Hessel Tiltman, Roland Plumbe and Edwin Clare. Outside work Scott took a keen interest in agriculture and was a keen horse breeder.

Scott died on Sunday 9 November 1930, having been at his desk until the day before.
