David Alan Stevenson was born in 1854, the son of the lighthouse engineer David Stevenson. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and at Edinburgh University, where he obtained a degree in engineering, before joining the practice of David and Thomas Stevenson.

Following the death of Thomas in 1887, David Alan Stevenson continued the firm in partnership with his brother Charles Alexander, under the style D & C Stevenson
