Nathaniel Young Armstrong Wales was born in 1831 in Belford, Northumberland, and was educated in Jedburgh. He commenced his architectural training in 1849 but emigrated to Australia in 1854 to prospect for gold. Meeting with little success, he moved to New Zealand in 1861 and in the following year entered the office of Mason & Clayton in Dunedin as an assistant. After five years he left to work as a superintendent of works for the Government of New Zealand, commencing practice as a principal in 1871 when his former employer William Mason took him into partnership as Mason & Wales. He continued the practice after Mason's retirement in 1875 and in 1892 took his own son, Patrick Young Wales, into partnership, the firm's title remaining unchanged.

Nathaniel Wales was an MP and was appointed Mayor of Dunedin in 1895. He died on 3 November 1903.
