James Buchanan Pentland Smith was born on 25 February 1872 and articled to John Lumsdaine of Edinburgh c.1888 and was thereafter assistant to Hippolyte Jean Blanc from c.1893. In 1896 he emigrated as assistant to Cathcart William Methven of Durban, and was briefly his partner 1908-09, withdrawing to become a salaried assistant in the Pretoria Public Works Department from 1909. He was admitted LRIBA on 20 March 1911 his proposers being Methven, George Sydney Herbert Bradford of Cape Town and Ernest Marston Powers of Melbourne, Australia, formerly of Cape Town.

Smith died in late 1919.
