The London Midland and Scottish Railway Company was formed in 1923 when the 123 railway companies of Britain were amalgamated into four principal companies, the others being the Great Western Railway, the London & North Eastern Railway, and the Southern Railway. The London Midland and Scottish Railway Company included the former Caledonian Railway and the Glasgow & South Western Railway, among others.

An architectural 'development group' was set up in the early 1940s by the then deputy architect to the LMS Railway's engineering and planning division, Leslie Martin (under C H Hamlyn). The development group was dedicated to the pursuit of research, standardisation and dimensional coordination, and designed, for example, an experimental steel-framed prefabricated station in 1945.
